Since March 2007, Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes women musicians, globally, has presented several successful programs to community seniors, adults, children and students. Through a number of grants, WIJSF organized and promoted Amazing Musicwomen at AARLCC in 2008, Lauderhill Jazz Series (2009) at the Warehouse in Lauderhill, Community Musicwomen (2009-2010) at ArtServe and senior centers in Sunrise and Miami Beach, and the Lauderhill Jam in 2010.

Founder and executive director Joan Cartwright will receive the Spirit of Excellence Music Leader of the Year Award from American Business Women's Association of South Broward on November 9, 2011. Along with musicians like guitarist KJ Denhert, harpist Chrystal Sawyer, pianists Melody Cole and Paul Banman; Bickley Rivera on steel pan, and singers Robin Avery, Jus' Cynthia, Jae Duncan and Mzuri Moyo, Joan has distributed the organization's first compilation CD Volume I. The second volume will be released in 2012.

At the website - www.wijsf.com - is a schedule of events, photo gallery of past events, ways to support the organization's work and a Directory of Jazz Women. The organization links with several music associations, including Donne in Musica, Sunshine Jazz Organization, South Florida Jazz Summit, Jazzonian, International Women in Jazz and Lauderhill Sister Cities.

The fifth year of WIJSF will open with a concert FROM BEBOP TO DOO WOP TO HIP HOP at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, with the Parkway Middle School of the Performing Arts Jazz Band and Vocal Ensemble performing musical arrangements of WIJSF members. Lorna Lesperance and Melton Mustafa, Jr. will conduct arrangements by Dr. Malcolm Black, 20-year veteran director of the Broward College Jazz Department. They will be joined by Robin Avery and Paul Banman on "Light The Way", a slideshow of light and love.

The music includes The Color of Love is You by Jus' Cynthia; Joan Cartwright's trilogy Countin' On The Count, A Natural Thing and We Are Free; Art Wilson's Rock and two Doo Wop selections by former Parkway students. This program is funded by a grant from the Student Enrichment in the Arts of Broward Schools. This concert is for students only, who are bussed in as part of the SEAS Project.

WIJSF plan’s to present concerts like this one and Amazing Musicwomen in the tri-county area at libraries, schools, cultural centers, senior facilities, campuses and concert halls. The educational component of the organization hinges on The Business of Music, promotion and performance development for musical members and creating awareness in the community-at-large about the musical skills of women. Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. has new Board members: Amanda Sedgwick is our new president, Joseph Mustipher is vice president, Mimi Johnson is secretary and Vanessa M. Lowe stays on as Treasurer. As Executive Director, Joan Cartwright continues to work diligently to recruit new members and acquire grant funding for performances.

September has been a blast! Lots of work and more in store.

August is almost over and the weather has been very entertaining.

Rain, rain, rain filling the lake. It's raining as I'm typing this post. Pouring outside my sliding door like it's never rained before. Soon it will stop and the humidity will crawl back to my screen like a lizard fresh from the swamp! No see ums will tick at my legs and arms exposed because of the heat.
Electric storms abound. The other day, it cracked so hard I squinted. No really, I gathered myself up in my arms and my whole body squinted or squinched or flinched.
Alligator spottings and removal. A resident took photos of four alligators, one 7 feet long and emailed it to the office. Wildlife people supposedly came and took them back to the Everglades. Things that definitely make you go hmmmmmmmm. Then, my neighbor informed me that she and her three kids moved to another apartment because - get this - she had bed bugs so bad she had to bag up everything so when they exterminated all of the clothes wouldn't be contaminating the surrounds. Then, she said she had to wash all of their clothing. Lots of clothing. So, last night I watched "Suits" a tv series with lawyers and one of them, a rookie lawyer's first case was a client whose landlord planted bed bugs in the apartment so he would move out rather than stay through the renovation and the landlord could charge far more money than the rent-controlled unit was getting him now. So, all night long, I itched and scratched thinking I had bed bugs. OMGoodness, the power of suggestion is just too strong. There goes the thunder.

Sisters in Harmony, Coconut Grove, the last weekend of July, Jus' Cynthia and I spent the weekend at the Courtyard Marriott on Bayshore Drive overlooking Coconut Grove Marina. We ate food from the wonderful market across the street and we sang for the gathering of SiH members for two days. The Author's Roundtable on Saturday evening featured nine local authors, including me.

Pool Breakfast a hit!

Today, our Pool Breakfast was fun. We sold over 20 Croissant sandwiches and drinks. The jewelry was beautiful by Lisa Keita and her sister, Deborah Clark. Karrie Klimas' Miche Purses were lovely and I got one with two changes. Thanks to Monica Bailey, Dee McCord Ochoa and Marika Guyton for setting up tables, too. Enjoyed seeing our Board Members Sherry Rudolph and Lydia Harris. Also, great seeing Val Parker and Stephanie Crooks.

I'm off for the summer, working on my first Ph.D. course. Then, I need to work on some other income efforts, writing, singing, website design.

All in all, 2011 has been a very busy year, up to now. Look forward to taking it a little easier for the rest of the year. Here's what's next. . .

We raised $1050 after expenses and the event was very well attended.

At four senior centers in Miami Beach, Community Musicwomen performed on January 26, 27 and 29, 2011, through a grant from Miami Beach Arts Gala. The musicians included Kim J on Sax, Keyboard and EWI; Crystal Sawyer The Lady of Harp; Parkway Middle School Vocal Ensemble led by Lorna Lesperance; Joan Cartwright and Melody Cole; and Joan Cartwright and Jazz Hotline with Paul Banman on keyboards and Anthony Turner on bass. The seniors appeared to be having a wonderful time and many of them asked when we were coming back! [Fort Lauderdale, FL] On March 16, 2010, Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. was recommended its first Broward Cultural Council grant ($4,300) to fund COMMUNITY MUSICWOMEN, a program that will take place during the month of May:

Business of Music Panel Discussion with professional musicians, performing arts students and adults on Saturday, May 8, 2010 @ 12 Noon to 4 p.m. at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale , FL. This is a one-day seminar with three panels to discuss the details of the business of music, including, original compositions, copyright registration, recording contracts, distribution, booking, touring and mechanical licenses (payment for using the music of others and how royalties are paid). Also discussed will be event planning, publicity, promotion and marketing.
JAMAICA HILL JAZZ JAM on Saturday, May 15, 2010 @ 5 to 9 p.m. onstage, in front of the RICE BOWL, 4080 N.W. 12th Street , Lauderhill , FL. This event is also sponsored by the City of Lauderhill and the Lauderhill Regional Chamber of Commerce. Corporate sponsors include Massive Motorsport.
Sing-Along on Friday, May 21, 2010 @ 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. at the Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center, 5000 Nob Hill Road, Sunrise, FL. Seniors revisit music from their youth from the great composers of our time like George Gershwin, Edward Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Count Basie, Johnny Mercer, Hoagie Carmichael and Fats Waller.
School Assembly at Walker Elementary School of the Performing Arts, 1001 NW 4th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, on Wednesday, May 19 and 26, 2010 @ 10 a.m. School Assembly at Parkway Middle School of the Performing Arts, 3600 NW 5th Court, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, on Tuesday, May 11 and 18, 2010 @ 10 a.m. At each school, musicians will provide two 1-hour sessions, mentoring girls with behavioral or achievement challenges for the purpose of instilling the importance of self-esteem and self-discipline in the music industry. They will explore performance goals, career vision and details of the business of music with the intention of sharing with troubled students the possibilities of being a musician and performer.

Founded in 2007, by Jazz vocalist, composer, historian and author Joan Cartwright, the mission of the organization is to promote Women in Jazz, locally, nationally and globally, through contacts, articles, interviews, newsletters, events, courses, clinics, workshops, lectures, research, history, archives, websites, film, audio and video recording, concerts, performances and recognition.

In February, Cartwright was the guest performer at the U.S. Embassy Blues on the Green concert in Kingston , Jamaica , where she appeared on two morning television shows, three radio shows and visited two primary schools that are recipients of 48 of Cartwright’s books donated by the Embassy. The books are Amazing Musicwomen, Songs For My Children and So, You Want To Be A Singer? As part of this grant, these three titles will be donated to the media centers of Walker Elementary and Parkway Middle.

Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

Today, I was dismayed by a program at the Arscht Center for the Performing Arts entitled Jazz Roots, a Larry Rosen Series, which had one woman, Patti Austin, on the bill. Known as a pop singer for decades, Patti never was billed as a jazz singer, until recently.

My question is where are the true jazz/blues singers and instrumentalists and why are they always omitted from the program?

Also, why are black women not represented on Rosen's committee?

Q: What was it like recording Joni Mitchell's songs?

A: Before, I almost never paid attention to lyrics. I’m so bad that when I hear a song that’s sung, English is gibberish. I don’t hear it. I mean, I would have to translate it from whatever the thing is that I hear to intelligible English. Because I hear it as a sound.

Diva JC: What does this say about all the women who sang jazz before Hancock was born and migrated to the Miles Davis camp?
